The ship was named after Abel Tasman the first known European to reach the islands of Van Diemens Land now Tasmania. She was constructed by Werft Nobiskrug in Rendsburg West Germany. She first went back to her builders yard for a refit and for a large box-like structure to be added to the stern of the ship for the crew because the Australian maritime union rules did not allow the crew to be under the car deck which is where the crew.

She was sold in 1984 to Transport Tasmania for service between Devonport Tasmania and Melbourne Australia as the Abel Tasman. Abel Tasman was 149 metres in length and 235 metres in width and could carry up to 919 passengers on four accomodation deck levels. You get to enjoy the beaches and wildlife and have a walk through some of the stunning forest the park has to offer.
